2030 and 2050 Goals

In 2020, Braskem long-term commitments were reassessed and renewed, considering the global challenges for 2030, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. Developing these new challenges was a broad and demanding process that took months. It involved 27 workshops and interviews with more than 500 leaders and members of the company. It also considered the analysis of corporate risks in relation to our business and value chain, mapped by the corporate risk management area.

The new Global Sustainable Development Strategy was approved by the Board of Directors and addresses seven relevant dimensions for the business in long-term commitments, connected to Braskem’s materiality matrix. In this way, its long-term strategy seeks to address, as a priority, the following sustainable development objectives:

  • In 2023, we achieved 31% of our 2030 commitments.

UNDERSTAND OUR DIMENSIONS:

1. HEALTH AND SAFETY

Safety is a non negotiable value for Braskem. Ensuring the safety and health of people, including employees, third parties and the surrounding communities, and the safety of processes are key elements for the continuity of the company’s operations. By 2030, Braskem wants to remain among the best companies in the sector in terms of Occupational Health and Safety and Process Safety.

2030 Goals. We aim to (i) Reduce the rate of occupational accidents to 0.5 MM/HHT, (ii) Reduce the rate of process accidents to 0.32 MM/HHT, (iii) Reduce the incidence of occupational diseases to 0 events, (iv) Implement 100% of the annual plans to mitigate socio-environmental risks.

To achieve these Goals, the company works on several fronts and develops projects such as:

  • Human Reliability Program: education, knowledge management and practical action in the field on attitudes that reduce exposure to risks at work..
  • Contractors Safety: improvement of safety management requirements for companies hired at industrial units, based on global standards.
  • Integral Health Program: the program encompasses the occupational physical aspects, the emotional and social aspects of the human being.
  • Digital Transformation: use of tools created by Digital Center e 4.0 Industry, based on data analysis and automation and focus on accident prevention.
2. ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL RESULTS

Creation of Sustainable Value. Incorporation of ESG criteria into the business strategy as a lever for long-term value. By 2030, Braskem wants to be a market leader for its contribution to sustainable development, ensuring the generation of shareholder value while meeting the interests of all our stakeholders.

2030 Goals. Maintain financial health and discipline in capital allocation, with a focus on creating ESG value. To this end, the company aims to (i) Reduce the leverage ratio to 2.0x (net debt/EBITDA, (ii) Achieve a Total Shareholder Return of 15%, (iii) Achieve a “strong” reputation with clients (RepTrek methodology) and (iv) Increase the S&P ESG Score to 74. To this end, the company is working on the following fronts:

  • Compliance System: continuous improvement of the Compliance System and governance practices.
  • Global Compact CFO Principles: commitment to integrating the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals into the Company’s financial management.
  • Unification of the Integrated Report: unique document containing the main sustainability reporting standards.
  • Executives with ESG goals: executives with goals linked to ESG performance.
  • Financial Discipline and ESG Value Creation: initiatives to maintain financial health and discipline in capital allocation, with a focus on ESG value creation.
3. ELIMINATION OF PLASTIC WASTE

Circular economy as a business opportunity. Braskem’s transition strategy to the circular economy is based on mechanical and chemical recycling, carried out through partnerships to transform plastic waste into new products and to develop innovation and technology, expanding the capacity for collecting, sorting and transforming plastic waste. By 2030, Braskem wants to be recognized globally as a company that develops the recycling value chain in the regions where it operates and wants to achieve leadership in the Americass

2030 Goals. Expanding the marketing of products with recycled content, working to prevent the improper disposal of plastic waste and making products increasingly circular. With this in mind, the company’s goal is to increase sales of products with recycled content to 1 million tons by 2030. To this end, various partnerships have been set up, such as:

  • Alcamare (MX): partnership with the largest recycler in the region, working together to develop and market recycled PE and PP crates.
  • Circular Packaging Development Center (BRA):Cazoolo, an innovation hub, through which the company establishes partnerships with clients, brand owners, designers, startups and universities to develop more sustainable packaging.
  • Partnership with the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research, TNO: aims to develop dissolution recycling technology, which is close to mechanical recycling.
4. COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Braskem works in alignment with the Paris Agreement, based on a climate change mitigation and adaptation plan, which aims to reduce, offset and capture emissions, as well as adapt its operations to potential climate risks. Thus, it has contributed significantly to the fight against climate change, through energy efficiency in its operations, increased use of renewable energy and expansion of the portfolio of chemicals and polymers from renewable sources.

2030 and 2050 Goals. To reach carbon neutrality by reducing and offsetting emissions through the production of renewable products and carbon capture. The aim is to (i) reduce greenhousegas (GHG) emissions by 15%, scopes 1 and 2. (ii) Increase bioproduct production capacity to 1 million tons. (iii) Reduce exposure to climate risks identified as high . (iv) Increase the percentage of renewable electricity in the total electricity purchased to 85%.

To achieve these goals, the Company is working on the following fronts:

  • Energy Efficiency: energy efficiency projects, oriented by digital tools and internal carbon pricing applied to new investments.
  • Renewable Electricity: long-term contracts for the purchase of energy from renewable sources, making it possible to reach a percentage of 82.6% clean and/or renewable electricity of the total electricity purchased by 2024.
  • Renewable energy solutions: addition of 60kt to the Bioethene production capacity in Triunfo/BR, with an investment of US$ 61 million, as well as feasibility studies for other expansion projects.
5. OPERATIONAL ECO EFFICIENCY

Increasingly sustainable operations. Braskem works continuously to improve the energy efficiency of its operations , has a reference model in water treatment and reuse and periodically evaluates the water risk of its operations. Thus, it contributes to make operations increasingly sustainable , ensures continuity of value generation and contributes to people’s lives. By 2030, Braskem wants to be among the references in operational eco efficiency in the global petrochemical industry.

2030 Objectives. The indicators for this dimension refer to the availability of water consumption, energy consumption, hazardous waste generation, air emissions, and chemical and biochemical oxygen demand. Challenging goals are being defined.

6. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS

Human rights are values intrinsic to Braskem and a duty of all its members. We act in such a way as to respect and promote them in our dealings with all our business stakeholders. We are committed to acting responsibly throughout our value chain and have been active mainly through private social investment programs to promote local development. Internally, we are guided by our Global Sustainable Development Policy, our Codes of Conduct for members and third parties, as well as guidelines and procedures.

2030 Goals. To respect and promote human rights throughout the chain and the local development for the communities surrounding the operations. In this sense, the company aims to: (i) increase the participation of women in leadership, (ii) achieve a strong reputation with communities, (iii) increase the participation of black members in Brazil and the United States, (iv) manage 100% of the high and medium risks in our value chain related to human rights, and (v) reach 500,000 people benefited by our Private Social Investments (PSI) and actions of the Global Volunteer Program. To this end, we highlight:

  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: We remain committed to achieving our ambition of “being recognized for our excellence as a human company, being a reference in promoting inclusion and equal opportunities, seeking to represent the society in which we operate “.
  • Maceió Case: continued compliance and consolidation of the actions taken by the company in agreements signed with federal, state and municipal authorities, including the Financial Compensation and Relocation Program, actions to monitor the region and close the mines.
  • Private Social Investment: “Empowering people means transforming realities”. That is why we seek to boost communities through causes that prioritize the circular economy and climate change mitigation, professional and technological education, and social inclusion through income generation and the application of our products.
7. SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION

A key factor in making all our other long-term Goals viable, innovation plays a crucial role in our strategy and includes a portfolio of projects that deliver more sustainable, high value-added solutions through chemistry and plastics. Braskem, a pioneer in the production of thermoplastic resins and chemicals based on renewable materials, continues to consolidate its position and significantly expand the production of resins and chemicals with recycled content. We remain determined to accelerate and deliver innovative and sustainable solutions for our customers, consumers and society.

2030 Goals. To consolidate the sustainable pipeline of projects and to continuously enable innovative and sustainable solutions, achieving a positive impact from R&D projects, with a Sustainability Index grater than 90%. To this end, the company has a robust ecosystem of innovation and projects on different fronts:

  • Next-Generation Processes: new technologies for existing assets, improving carbon and energy efficiency, creating differentiation in performance, as well as reducing vulnerabilities.
  • Recycling: developing products to create and improve the portfolio of post-consumer resins, as well as improving technology and looking for more alternatives in the chemical recycling platform.
  • Convertion of CO2 to Chemicals: technologies to convert CO2 directly into chemicals, materials and other products. Includes solutions of biotechnology.
  • Conversion of Biomass into Chemicals: technology for converting biomass into value-added chemicals and materials.
